Our story

Art is for everyone

And it's never too early — or too late — to fall in love with it.

Artist, Author & Teacher

A client once asked me when I decided to become an artist. At birth.

When I was seven, I taught myself calligraphy out of the "L" volume of the World Book Encyclopedia. From there I went on to designing logos for small businesses — my first paid job was for a company called "Dog Gone Good," with bone-shaped letters. I received $25 and ran right out and bought a pair of Earthshoes.

Today, you'll find me in front of my easel throughout the day working on one or more compositions. I adore color — the energy of it and how it makes me feel. Animals are a favorite subject: dogs, cats, koi fish, chickens. The challenge of capturing a cherished pet's personality on canvas is irresistible. Humor is another oft-found element in my work. While I work to attain a degree of realism, I am a painter — so it is important to me that you never forget that real hands created the strokes.

I have always been aware of the role of the soul in creating art. Using Reiki, a hands-on energy healing technique, I infuse my art with powerful positive energy. I hope my paintings bring a little art and soul into your living room.

My dining room is now my studio. Being amidst the family activities makes me feel connected and inspired — and it allows me to put on a pot of spaghetti sauce and stir it between brush strokes. I imagine many great artists had the smell of linseed oil and garlic in their studios!

In addition to working on my own projects, I take commissions in a variety of subject matter — from fine art pet portraits to calligraphy — and offer art workshops in acrylics, watercolors, and pastels. I live in Northern California with my high school sweetheart and husband of nearly 40 years, and our two dogs, Harley and Olive.

Why we publish

We believe that a child who grows up with beautiful, thoughtfully made books develops something lasting — a sense of wonder, an eye for beauty, and the confidence to make things of their own. Our books are designed to be held, colored, displayed, and loved.

Art for all ages

From picture books for little ones to coloring books printed on real watercolor paper for adults, every title is made with an illustrator's eye and a teacher's heart.

Made to last

We choose materials that honor the work — archival paper, frameable designs, and illustrations worth returning to again and again.

Rooted in wonder

Every Thistle Hill House book begins with a single question: what would make a child (or a kid at heart) stop, look, and feel something?
